Tha Gable Edit | Grandma Chic: A Love Letter to Hermes and the Timelessness of Silk

Grandma Chic: A Love Letter to Hermes and the Timelessness of Silk

Coastal Grandma started it all but come on—did it really??
Let’s give credit where it’s due. Diane Keaton has been fabulous from the start. Scarves have always been in the picture. And I’m here to make a bold but very true declaration: Grandma Chic isn’t a fad. It’s not even a trend (and anyone in marketing knows that’s still a step up). No, my friends, this is a CLASSIC.

It’s enduring, it’s elegant, and—blessedly—it’s not going anywhere.  So you'll be seeing multiple posts about my love affair with my 'Grandma' like styles.

A Look Back: From Jackie O to Cannes Aliens

Think old money style with a modern wink. Jackie O and the Kennedy clan made polo and prep feel aspirational. Grandma Chic is simply the silked-up version of those days—the dressier, glossier, sometimes sassier cousin to the crisp white pants and club blazers.

Personally, I’m obsessed with Hermes scarves. They bring wit, charm, and joy to my everyday wardrobe. My Fric and Frac dog collar scarf? A conversation starter every single time. My Cannes scarf with aliens touching down? A delightful dose of surreal storytelling tied around my neck. Hermes scarves are wearable art—and lucky for us, they fold up small but show up big.

Why Hermes? Because I Like My Sleuthing with Silk

In a world obsessed with Easter egg clues in shows like Severance, Hermes scarves are the IRL version. They’re the classic, ever-present reminder that humor and hidden meaning have been with us 5eva (because 4eva is too short). Each scarf tells a story. You just have to look closely—and sometimes fold cleverly—to find it.

The Collection Game: My Strategy for Scoring Scarves Without the McDuck Bank Account

Let’s be real: This is a pricey love affair. None of us are swimming in gold coins like Scrooge McDuck—well, at least I’m not. But that hasn’t stopped me from building a beloved scarf collection over the years. Here’s how:

🎁 1. The Birthday Tradition

Once a year, I gift myself a scarf from an Hermes boutique. It’s a ritual. I research the designs, read about the stories behind them, and pick the one that feels like me. Then I make it an experience—whether I’m in New York or Paris, visiting the store is always a treat.
My first Paris purchase? I was so nervous walking in, buying what was likely the lowest-cost item in the store and a HUGE investment for me. But the associate treated me like royalty—teaching me how to fold, encouraging me to try on multiple options until I found the one. A deep blue classic with a saddle motif. It was magic.
Shown below, worn as a shirt.

🔍 2. Consignment Queen Energy

Scouring secondhand spots is half the fun. And if you know where to look, you can find gems for a fraction of the price.
Some of my favorite haunts:

  • The Real Real – A go-to for online treasure hunting. The selection is vast thanks to its high visibility.

  • My Sister’s Closet (Arizona) – Total gold mine. I’ve found gems at all their locations, and for the furniture fans, their sister store My Sister’s Attic is a dream.

  • Vintage by Misty (Arizona) – Equal parts fashion hunt and celeb sighting opportunity. I fell for a retired crinkle scarf I couldn’t afford… only for it to arrive in the mail a week later. My dad had gone back to buy it for me. I still tear up thinking about that gesture. It’s one of my most beloved pieces.

So How Do You Wear It?

Let me count the ways. Around your neck. On your bag. In your hair. As a belt. As a bracelet. Even—yes—as a dog collar. Scarves are the ultimate transformer. Sharing a few pics below of how I style mine and why Grandma Chic is here to stay. 📸

Midlife Crisis? More Like a Midlife Calibration

Midlife Crisis? More Like a Midlife Calibration I’m well past my 40th birthday, and with the big 4-5 coming this August ( ACK!! ), I’ve started feeling like I’m due for a midlife crisis—or at least a midlife reflection. I don’t need a red convertible or a spontaneous tattoo (yet), but I do find myself looking back, looking forward, and trying to make sense of this wildly beautiful in-between place. Personal Reflection Yes, I probably could’ve been healthier. But you know what? [Cliche Alert] I did it MY WAY . I’ve cried often, loved hard, and found the space that defines me. And that, in itself, feels like a major win. Things I'd Always Recommend for a Life Well Earned 1. Keep experimenting. Make the big leaps. I was nearly paralyzed before committing to Vanderbilt for B-school . It felt like if I picked a door, the other would close.  And that's not wrong - I'd say it's quite spot on.   The best choice though?  Following my gut.  I got into “better” schools a...

The Branded Perspective | The New Economy Is Here—And Big Brands Will Win It

We are entering a new chapter in the consumer goods economy—one shaped not just by inflation or post-pandemic ripple effects, but by sweeping policy changes, tariffs, and a recalibration of supply chains. It’s not just the cost of doing business that's rising—it's the cost of staying in the game. In this emerging landscape, I believe big, established brands will be the inevitable winners. This is the first in a series of articles where I’ll unpack what’s happening, why it matters, and what it means for both brands and the broader ecosystem of grocers, distributors, and consumers. While many of the effects are just beginning to emerge, one thing is clear: we’re headed for a period of contraction, not expansion. Marketing Dollars Will Be First to Go As supply chain costs and tariffs eat into margins, marketing budgets will be among the first line items reduced—especially for brands trying to stay afloat. But here’s the catch: marketing is not just a spend, it’s a lifeline. It...

Not Quite a Hallmark Movie: My Altoona Interlude

When I told friends in New York City that I’d be spending a stretch of time back in my hometown of Altoona, Pennsylvania , I got a lot of raised eyebrows—and more than a few Hallmark jokes. “Are you going to fall in love with the hometown guy and ditch the big city for good?” they asked, half-kidding. (Or maybe not.) It’s a fair question, I suppose. A big-city girl returns to her roots, reconnects with small-town charm, rediscovers what really matters… cue the snow gently falling on a lovingly restored town square. But let me set the record straight right now: there was no flannel-wearing lumberjack, no surprise inheritance of a struggling bookstore, and no last-minute decision to stay forever. But what did happen was something unexpected—and honestly, really lovely. At first, I worried I’d be bored. (Sorry, Altoona, but I’ve got to be honest!) The last time I spent a significant chunk of time here, I was 18 and counting the days until I left for college. Back then, the town felt a...
