The Gable Edit | Grandma Chic : Kaftans (or Caftans πŸ…, πŸ…)

The Gable Edit: The Case for the Everyday Kaftan

If you’ve been here a while, you know I’ve been embracing my Grandma Era. Truthfully, it started creeping in nearly a decade ago—and kaftans were the gateway.

Kaftans are relaxed, romantic, and—let’s be honest—unfairly stigmatized. They’ve been dismissed as loungewear for housewives in the 1970s or reserved for grandmothers in retirement communities. But let me offer a counterpoint: Babe Paley in Halston. Hosting a dinner party. Floating through Fifth Avenue society like a dream. That’s the kaftan energy I’m channeling.

Sure, kaftans are a staple of resort wear. But what if I told you they’re also your secret weapon for dressing up, dressing down, and everything in between? Here’s how I’ve collected—and worn—mine over the years.

☀️ Resort Romance: The Cartagena Kaftan

The first one came into my life in Colombia, while island-hopping with my two best friends—Little Londoner Jen and Chi-Town Charmer Jane (new nicknames, who dis?). I found a sheer, wispy floral kaftan that moved like poetry and looked like vacation. It was everything you want in a cover-up: breezy, beautiful, and—dare I say—sexy without trying.

This is the version most people picture when they hear “kaftan.” But let’s go deeper.

πŸ—½ City Chic: The DVF Sample Sale Kaftan

Back in NYC, during one of the twice-yearly DVF sample sales (a tradition with my friend Serena during our Colgate Palmolive days), I scored a mixed-media masterpiece. I had bold visions: Carrie Bradshaw-level confidence, strutting through the city in it with a bralette and heels.

That dream never quite came to life—but it didn’t have to. I’ve worn this one as a swim cover-up, sure, but also as a layering piece over skinny trousers and a tank. Add a statement earring? Suddenly it’s dinner-ready.

Lesson: Kaftans aren’t just for sand and SPF. With the right styling, they belong in your regular rotation.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡¦ From Marrakesh to Matrimony & Midtown: The Mustard Kaftan

This was the turning point. On a trip to Morocco with the J duo—Jen & Jane—we wandered deep into the souks of Marrakesh and found a floor-length mustard kaftan that felt... cinematic. Elegant, effortless, and most importantly: wearable in real life.

I’ve worn it to my cousin Leah’s wedding, to a Friday at the office, and to dinner with friends in the city. Throw on some sandals or a heel, maybe a belt if you're feeling ambitious, and you’re good to go.

This kaftan is proof: they’re not just a vacation luxury. They’re a wardrobe essential.

πŸ’« The Crown Jewel: The Angel Kaftan

Ah, the one that got me emotional. Back in the Marrakesh souks, Jen and I took a detour away from our fearless explorer Jane. We turned a corner and there it was—hanging high, glinting in the sun, like it had been waiting just for me. A flashier, more dramatic kaftan—equal parts art and outfit.

Cash was tight. Souks only take cash. But Jen saw my face, and without hesitation, we pooled our dirhams and made it mine.

This one hasn’t been worn yet. The original plan? Save it for my 70th birthday. It's that kind of piece. But lately, I’m wondering: why wait? Maybe it makes its debut at 50. Or even sooner...if I get it to a good tailor (Suggestions Welcome!!)

Because if a kaftan can make you feel like a Fifth Avenue swan—why not wear it on a Wednesday?

Wear It Well: Why the Kaftan Deserves a Bigger Role

Kaftans are comfortable, yes. But they’re also transformative. They flow. They flatter. They don't demand shapewear or apologies. They travel well and transition effortlessly—from beach to brunch, boardroom to black tie (with the right accessories).

This is your sign to stop saving your kaftans. Pull them out. Style them up. Wear the glamour now.

After all, your Grandma Era can be golden—and kaftans are the crown.

Midlife Crisis? More Like a Midlife Calibration

Midlife Crisis? More Like a Midlife Calibration I’m well past my 40th birthday, and with the big 4-5 coming this August ( ACK!! ), I’ve started feeling like I’m due for a midlife crisis—or at least a midlife reflection. I don’t need a red convertible or a spontaneous tattoo (yet), but I do find myself looking back, looking forward, and trying to make sense of this wildly beautiful in-between place. Personal Reflection Yes, I probably could’ve been healthier. But you know what? [Cliche Alert] I did it MY WAY . I’ve cried often, loved hard, and found the space that defines me. And that, in itself, feels like a major win. Things I'd Always Recommend for a Life Well Earned 1. Keep experimenting. Make the big leaps. I was nearly paralyzed before committing to Vanderbilt for B-school . It felt like if I picked a door, the other would close.  And that's not wrong - I'd say it's quite spot on.   The best choice though?  Following my gut.  I got into “better” schools a...

The Branded Perspective | The New Economy Is Here—And Big Brands Will Win It

We are entering a new chapter in the consumer goods economy—one shaped not just by inflation or post-pandemic ripple effects, but by sweeping policy changes, tariffs, and a recalibration of supply chains. It’s not just the cost of doing business that's rising—it's the cost of staying in the game. In this emerging landscape, I believe big, established brands will be the inevitable winners. This is the first in a series of articles where I’ll unpack what’s happening, why it matters, and what it means for both brands and the broader ecosystem of grocers, distributors, and consumers. While many of the effects are just beginning to emerge, one thing is clear: we’re headed for a period of contraction, not expansion. Marketing Dollars Will Be First to Go As supply chain costs and tariffs eat into margins, marketing budgets will be among the first line items reduced—especially for brands trying to stay afloat. But here’s the catch: marketing is not just a spend, it’s a lifeline. It...

Not Quite a Hallmark Movie: My Altoona Interlude

When I told friends in New York City that I’d be spending a stretch of time back in my hometown of Altoona, Pennsylvania , I got a lot of raised eyebrows—and more than a few Hallmark jokes. “Are you going to fall in love with the hometown guy and ditch the big city for good?” they asked, half-kidding. (Or maybe not.) It’s a fair question, I suppose. A big-city girl returns to her roots, reconnects with small-town charm, rediscovers what really matters… cue the snow gently falling on a lovingly restored town square. But let me set the record straight right now: there was no flannel-wearing lumberjack, no surprise inheritance of a struggling bookstore, and no last-minute decision to stay forever. But what did happen was something unexpected—and honestly, really lovely. At first, I worried I’d be bored. (Sorry, Altoona, but I’ve got to be honest!) The last time I spent a significant chunk of time here, I was 18 and counting the days until I left for college. Back then, the town felt a...
