The Gable Edit | The Great Birkenstock Debate: Timeless, Trendy or Unhip?

Birkenstocks: A Boutique Debate Turned Blog Post

**Product Images borrowed from Birkenstock.com

While spending time at my friend Kelly’s boutique—Kelly’s Kollections (you’ll definitely want to check it out, so I've linked it here!)—I often jump in to help with social media and whatever else she needs. And like any great boutique, the conversations tend to swirl around trends: what’s in, what’s over, and what’s suddenly back again.

Recently, while chatting at the store, my friend Heather sparked a conversation that instantly lit me up. “Sara,” she asked, “what do you think about Birkenstock sandals?” And let me tell you—I responded with serious enthusiasm: GREAT QUESTION.

Because let’s be honest, Birkenstocks aren’t just shoes—they’re a whole conversation.

Are Birks Still Cool?

It’s an ongoing debate. Are Birkenstocks reserved for the crunchy crowd? Are they nostalgic relics for those of us who first wore them in the '90s? Or are they now full-blown fashion renaissance reserved only for the Gen Z sock-and-sandal crew?

For me, Birkenstocks are timeless. They’re a classic for a reason—and I say that with the authority of someone who purchased her first pair in the eighth grade (as I clear my throat and quietly admit… that was 1994). Those OGs? They stuck with me until 2022. Not even kidding. That kind of longevity earns serious respect.

Why I’m Still a Birkenstock Girl (and You Might Be, Too)

  1. They’re Built to Last
That first pair of Arizona Birks made it through decades of life. If you’re someone who values quality over quantity, this alone makes them worth every penny.

  2. They’re Comfortable as Heck
I’ve walked entire European cities in these shoes—20K steps a day, easy—carrying everything I owned on my back. When you're a pedestrian in NYC or traveling light, comfort isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. Birks get that.

  3. They Can Be Seriously Stylish
I truly believe Birkenstocks can be part of a chic outfit. It’s all in the styling. For instance, my current pair has a camouflage print that’s subtle but still fun (see above!!)—and they weirdly go with everything. I also adore the Madrid single-buckle white version - they will be my next brand investment. Pair them with white slacks or a floaty dress, and you’ve got effortless elegance with edge.

It’s About the Intention

For me, Birkenstocks are no longer just the sandal you toss on to stomp around in. I integrate them into my outfit intentionally. They’re a choice, not an afterthought. And when you wear something with confidence, it transforms into something greater than just footwear—it becomes a part of your vibe.

When I wear my Birks, I feel great. Not just physically (though let’s be real, arch support is a dream), but also because they reflect a thoughtful kind of personal style. That’s the sweet spot—when comfort and confidence intersect.

Photo Inspo: Birks in the Wild

Throughout this post, I’ve included some photos to inspire you—how I style my own pairs, looks I love, and ways to incorporate Birkenstocks into your day-to-day style whether you’re running errands, hopping a plane, or strutting the sidewalks of NYC.

I hope they show just how versatile these iconic sandals really are.

Final Thoughts: When You Love It, It’s a Classic

So to anyone wondering if Birkenstocks are still “cool” and if they work in a 40 something’s wardrobe: the answer is yes, if you want them to. Style is personal. Trends come and go. But when something makes you feel like you, that’s always in fashion.

Whether you’re new to the Birk life or just digging your old ones out of the closet, don’t be afraid to wear them proudly. After all, they’ve walked you this far.

Midlife Crisis? More Like a Midlife Calibration

Midlife Crisis? More Like a Midlife Calibration I’m well past my 40th birthday, and with the big 4-5 coming this August ( ACK!! ), I’ve started feeling like I’m due for a midlife crisis—or at least a midlife reflection. I don’t need a red convertible or a spontaneous tattoo (yet), but I do find myself looking back, looking forward, and trying to make sense of this wildly beautiful in-between place. Personal Reflection Yes, I probably could’ve been healthier. But you know what? [Cliche Alert] I did it MY WAY . I’ve cried often, loved hard, and found the space that defines me. And that, in itself, feels like a major win. Things I'd Always Recommend for a Life Well Earned 1. Keep experimenting. Make the big leaps. I was nearly paralyzed before committing to Vanderbilt for B-school . It felt like if I picked a door, the other would close.  And that's not wrong - I'd say it's quite spot on.   The best choice though?  Following my gut.  I got into “better” schools a...

The Branded Perspective | The New Economy Is Here—And Big Brands Will Win It

We are entering a new chapter in the consumer goods economy—one shaped not just by inflation or post-pandemic ripple effects, but by sweeping policy changes, tariffs, and a recalibration of supply chains. It’s not just the cost of doing business that's rising—it's the cost of staying in the game. In this emerging landscape, I believe big, established brands will be the inevitable winners. This is the first in a series of articles where I’ll unpack what’s happening, why it matters, and what it means for both brands and the broader ecosystem of grocers, distributors, and consumers. While many of the effects are just beginning to emerge, one thing is clear: we’re headed for a period of contraction, not expansion. Marketing Dollars Will Be First to Go As supply chain costs and tariffs eat into margins, marketing budgets will be among the first line items reduced—especially for brands trying to stay afloat. But here’s the catch: marketing is not just a spend, it’s a lifeline. It...

Not Quite a Hallmark Movie: My Altoona Interlude

When I told friends in New York City that I’d be spending a stretch of time back in my hometown of Altoona, Pennsylvania , I got a lot of raised eyebrows—and more than a few Hallmark jokes. “Are you going to fall in love with the hometown guy and ditch the big city for good?” they asked, half-kidding. (Or maybe not.) It’s a fair question, I suppose. A big-city girl returns to her roots, reconnects with small-town charm, rediscovers what really matters… cue the snow gently falling on a lovingly restored town square. But let me set the record straight right now: there was no flannel-wearing lumberjack, no surprise inheritance of a struggling bookstore, and no last-minute decision to stay forever. But what did happen was something unexpected—and honestly, really lovely. At first, I worried I’d be bored. (Sorry, Altoona, but I’ve got to be honest!) The last time I spent a significant chunk of time here, I was 18 and counting the days until I left for college. Back then, the town felt a...
